Former Los Angeles Jr. King Cayla Barnes was one of 23 players named to the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team that will participate in next month's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Barnes is a three-time member of the U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team and is the only player to have won three consecutive gold medals at the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship (2014, 2015 and 2016). She earned back-to-back Directorate Awards as the tournament’s best defenseman in 2016 and 2017.
She has also competed as a member of the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team at the Under-18 Series three times (2014, 2015 and 2016) and was on the Women’s National Team roster for a pair of games against Canada in December 2016. In total, she has registered 14 points (three goals) in 23 games played with Team USA dating back to 2014.
Barnes, who joined the Women’s National Team in October, is taking time away from Boston College, where she played in five games as a freshman during the 2017-18 season.
“Today we took another step toward achieving our ultimate goal, which is to bring home a gold medal from South Korea,” said Reagan Carey, general manager of the 2018 U.S. Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team and also the director of women’s hockey for USA Hockey. “We’ve had an exceptional four months in Wesley Chapel, Florida (the team’s training headquarters), leading up to this point and are confident that these 23 women give our country the best opportunity to reach the top of the podium in February.”
The U.S. has medaled in all five Olympic Winter Games since women’s ice hockey was introduced in 1998, including gold in that inaugural year.
The U.S. women open Olympic play on Feb. 11 against Finland.
