Jr. Kings, Lions teams advance in SCAHA playoffs

Six Los Angeles Jr. Kings and LA Lions teams advanced through the quarterfinal round of the SCAHA playoffs in their respective divisions to punch their tickets to this weekend’s semifinal round, which will be played on March 16-17 at Ice Station Valencia.

Six Los Angeles Jr. Kings and LA Lions teams - the Jr. Kings’ 14U A; 12U A1 and 2; 10U A1 and 2; and Lions’ 10U B Flight II - advanced through the quarterfinal round of the Southern California Amateur Hockey Association (SCAHA) playoffs in their respective divisions to punch their tickets to this weekend’s semifinal round, which will be played on March 16-17 at Ice Station Valencia.

Under the direction of head coach Tony Rudy, the Jr. Kings’ 14U A club (pictured) finished with a 0-0-2-1 record (five points) in its quarters, which were contested at Burbank’s LA Kings Ice at Pickwick Gardens.

The Jeff Bain-led 12U A1 team forged a 2-1 mark (six points) in its bracket at Ice Station Valencia, while the A2 club, coached by Sam Graham, went 1-1-1 (five).

Coached by Dimitri Voulelikas, the Jr. Kings' 10U A1 squad fashioned a 1-2 record (three points) in its quarters, which were also played in Valencia, and the Jamie Storr-led A2 team finished with a 2-1 record (six).

The Lions’ 10U B team, under the direction of head coach Richard Gomez, went 2-1 (six points) at Anaheim’s KHS Ice Arena earning a berth to the semis in its division.

The winners of each semifinal will advance to the SCAHA Championships, which will be played on March 23-24 at El Segundo's Toyota Sports Center - home of the Jr. Kings and Lions.

At the Tier II level, the Jr. Kings’ 12U AA1 team, led by head coach Kyle Calder, will compete in this weekend’s four-team California Amateur Hockey Association State Championships, which will be played from March 15-17 at Ice-Plex Escondido.

Three Jr. Kings teams participated in last weekend’s Pacific District Championships, including its James Gasseau-coached 15U AAA team, which went 2-2 in its bracket at Irvine’s Great Park Ice to advance to the championship game (it fell to the San Jose Jr. Sharks in the finale, 4-2).

In Las Vegas, the Shawn Pitcher-coached 14U AAA squad also advanced to the championship game, falling to the Anaheim Jr. Ducks in the deciding contest, 5-2 (the club finished the weekend with a 2-3 record).

The program’s state champion 16U AAA squad, led by head coach Jeff Turcotte, finished its districts weekend - also played in Irvine - with a 1-2 record.

L.A.’s 12U BB squad, led by head coach Chet Carlbom, had its season come to an end in the SCAHA quarterfinal playoff round after putting together a 1-2 record (three points) in its bracket in Escondido, while the Ryan Santana-coached 12U B team went 1-2 at KHS.

The LA Lions’ 14U AA team, coached by Shannon Farrell, also competed at the Pacific District Championships, which were played last weekend in Anchorage. The team finished with a 0-3 record.
