Champions crowned at Labor Day Festival

A record-high 62 teams from Arizona, Nevada and Northern and Southern California converged on five Southern California rinks last weekend to compete in the seventh annual Los Angeles Jr. Kings-hosted Labor Day Festival Tournament with champions crowned in 10 divisions.

A record-high 62 teams from Arizona, Nevada and Northern and Southern California converged on five Southern California rinks last weekend to compete in the seventh annual Los Angeles Jr. Kings-hosted Labor Day Festival Tournament, which ran from Aug. 31-Sept. 3.

Champions were crowned in 10 divisions: High School (Bakersfield Jr. Condors); 14U A (Jr. Kings); 12U AAA (Jr. Kings), A (California Wave) and BB (Valencia Knights); 10U A (Jr. Kings-Storr - pictured) and BB (Wave); and 8U A (Valencia Jr. Flyers), 8U B-Gretzky (Jr. Flyers) and -Robitaille (Jr. Kings-Bain).

“We can’t thank all of the participating clubs enough for helping deliver what proved to be an exciting weekend of hockey to kick off the new season,” tournament director Brian McDonough said. “There was so much great competition in every division, and the camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed by all of the players, coaches, team managers and families was second to none.”

All division champions were awarded a banner, and all players on the championship teams received medals. Players on the runner-up teams in each division also received medals.

This year’s Labor Day Festival games were contested at Toyota Sports Center (El Segundo), Pickwick Ice (Burbank), East West Ice Palace (Artesia), The Rinks-Lakewood ICE (Lakewood) and Skating Edge Ice Arena (Harbor City).

“We can’t thank enough the dedicated staffs at each facility, as well as our volunteers, for helping make tournaments of this scope hit on all cylinders,” McDonough added. “We’re lucky to have so many great, selfless people on our team and are truly appreciative of all their efforts.”

Tournament vendors included Northwest Designs of CaliforniaOrigami OwlCustom Sports BannerTeammate Robotics and Quality One Engravers.

Kings CoveGrimaldi’s PizzeriaMendocino Farms and Tin Roof Bistro served as restaurant partners for the tournament, and PSE Event Housing successfully coordinated all hotel accommodations for out-of-town teams that visited over the weekend.

All 10U BB through High School games played at Toyota Sports Center were streamed live via the Internet through LiveBarn.com.

The Labor Day Weekend Festival is part of the Jr. Kings’ Tinseltown Tournament Series. Pre-registration is now open for the Series’ remaining four events of the 2018-19 season: the Thanksgiving Extravaganza (Nov. 22-25); Holiday Showdown (Dec. 27-30); Presidents’ Day Challenge (Feb. 15-18, 2019); and Carmen Starr Memorial Day Classic (May 24-27, 2019).
