The Los Angeles Jr. Kings’ 12U AA1 team punched its ticket to next month's California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) State Championships after advancing through the Tier II Playdowns, which were contested last weekend (Feb. 22-24) at Vacaville Ice Sports.
The Jr. Kings opened Playdowns on Friday with a 2-0 triumph over Anaheim Jr. Ducks 1, followed by a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Jr. Gulls on Saturday.
“It was an outstanding effort from top to bottom,’” said Jr. Kings assistant coach Maik Tatavosian, who was behind the bench over the weekend with assistant Joe Guimont (Kyle Calder is the team’s head coach). “Our boys came in focused and with a purpose and it showed in those two wins.
“Bottom line is every one of these kids plays for each other and has all season long, and that’s what you need most on weekends like this when there’s so much on the line.”
Members of the team include: forwards Sheldon Alexander, Korey Cardenas Aston, Nate Cohen, Noah Frankel, Timothy Greenleaf, Sean Hawe, Maddox Hood, Noah Jimbo, Nicholas Mardani, Blake Osoria and Micah Vielma; defensemen Diego Bass, Logan Fessenden, Luca Mestrandrea, Austin Sheu, Tevin Stokes and Dylan Wise; and goaltenders Camden Mueller and Massimo Pelusi.
The CAHA Tier II State Championships will be played from March 15-17 at Ice-Plex Escondido and will also feature Ice Dogs Hockey Club 1 and 2 and the Jr. Gulls.
“When Kyle and I sat down during tryouts, we knew we had a special group,” Tatavosian added. “This team has come a long ways since the start of the season and we’re confident it has what it takes to bring home a championship.”
The Jr. Kings’ 14U AA1 team came up short of advancing to States after putting together a 0-2 record at its Playdowns, which were also played in Vacaville.
